Scope Magazine's Famous First Lines Contest 2015

"I woke up in a pile of bones."

Are you hooked? Curious? Intrigued? Maybe even afraid?

In September, our class participated in Scholastic Scope Magazine's "Fabulous First Lines" contest. We studied various first lines of literature and students practiced their writing skills by coming up with their own original first lines. Thousands of entries were submitted from across the nation and 12 finalists were selected by author, Lemony Snicket, who is best known for his children's books, A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Of these 12 finalists, one line will be chosen and used as the hook in his next book due out in May. Our very own Gunner H. was chosen as one of the finalists. His line was inspired while reading the Harry Potter series. He said, "I was thinking about a part in Harry Potter when they are in a pile of bones. I asked myself, what would it be like to just wake up in a pile of bones?" Gunner received a certificate, a letter of congratulations and a writer's journal to begin collecting his literary musings.

Congratulations Gunner! Vidor Middle School is cheering for you and proud of your creativity and enthusiasm for reading.
