Scope Magazine's Famous First Lines Contest 2015

"I woke up in a pile of bones."

Are you hooked? Curious? Intrigued? Maybe even afraid?

In September, our class participated in Scholastic Scope Magazine's "Fabulous First Lines" contest. We studied various first lines of literature and students practiced their writing skills by coming up with their own original first lines. Thousands of entries were submitted from across the nation and 12 finalists were selected by author, Lemony Snicket, who is best known for his children's books, A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Of these 12 finalists, one line will be chosen and used as the hook in his next book due out in May. Our very own Gunner H. was chosen as one of the finalists. His line was inspired while reading the Harry Potter series. He said, "I was thinking about a part in Harry Potter when they are in a pile of bones. I asked myself, what would it be like to just wake up in a pile of bones?" Gunner received a certificate, a letter of congratulations and a writer's journal to begin collecting his literary musings.

Congratulations Gunner! Vidor Middle School is cheering for you and proud of your creativity and enthusiasm for reading.

Book Spotlight: Leontyne Price: Voice of a Century

To celebrate Black History Month, this years spotlight will be on Leontyne Price. She is an extraordinary opera singer and below you can watch a performance and listen to one of her famous recordings.

I was asked to review a beautifully illustrated picture book about Ms. Price. We will read it in class this week and she will be added to our African American biography cards. To read my review of Leontyne Price: Voice of a Century click HERE.

Here is a copy of the added card.

A big 'Thank You' to I'd So Rather Be Reading for this addition to our classroom and to Miss Bailleaux for creating the biography card.

Calender Issues

It just came to my attention that the majority of my calender entries are not appearing. I apologize and I am currently trying to fix the problem. I will continue to send reminders through Remind 101.
